Working 9-5

Working 9-5

***NEWS FLASH***

The majority of you will be reading this sat on your bum… we spend so much of your day to day lives sat down… at a desk, on the commute or on the sofa. Some of you struggle to get your steps in, keep active during the working day, and lack energy. Reaching for the coffee to wake you up in the morning, in the mid morning slump, or the afternoon lull. I am not judging, I have been there, it’s draining!

But there are things you can do to not only increase your movement but it will increase your overall energy.

  • Workout in the morning – My own personal experience when I worked in an sedentary job I was more likely to do a workout in the morning. As when I would get home in the evening I would ‘feel’ tired and it was struggle street to motivate myself to workout. At least if its done in the morning that’s it done for the day, tick it off the list, and go about the day with a spring in your step from the post workout endorphins.
  • Go for a walk – this sounds so simple but how many of you actually do this? I know with one of my girls she was struggling to get her steps in when lockdown hit as she is WFH. Once she set a routine on her lunch to do a route she was off and now does it everyday. One other of my girls goes for a walk every morning at 6am come rain or shine! Set a plan and never miss it!
  • Accountability – This can be a buddy, like the girl above that walks every 6am, she goes with a friend. So they feel like they can’t let each other down. One other of my girls has written up a daily accountability chart to make sure she gets out. If you have a fitness watch you can set a reminder for movement.
  • Get up hourly – My business coach Nik uses this idea to increase productivity but I am going to add an energy increasing strategy to it. Set a timer every 55 min to go off. (Nik uses an old skool kitchen timer… the red tomato one that you twist) and when it goes off you have to get up walk about the apartment/office, stretch, move for 5 mins. Not only will it make you have more energy, be more productive but also move more! WINNER!!!
  • Get a standing desk – Last Thursday I did 6,000 steps before I left my apartment at 14.00! Yeah I know I am a fitness coach… but I wasn’t doing exercise all that time. TBH I am writing this at 8am on Thursday 16th and I have already done 2,500. My reason is I don’t sit down… yes I might be an extreme case and I am not expecting you to stand up all day. But If you stood up more often it would have massive benefits on you when when I am doing my zoom 1-2-1 calls with clients I have a tripod and tablet that I use & I stand up the whole time. One of my girls posted her standing desk she had made out of a stand she got from Amazon… see pic below.  It is a great idea and something you can get for home, or request at an office! When I worked in Oz these standing desks were popular and now I understand why.

Try some of these methods out to increase your day to day energy! I always think it’s funny but the more we stand/move the more energy we have.
